Description
The Stonewall Uprising sparked a nationwide LGBTQ+ rights movement that characterized much of the 1970s. My research aims to identify post-Stonewall activism in Central Pennsylvania through the actions of the Pennsylvania Rural Gay Caucus (PRGC). The PRGC was created to send rural representatives to then Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp’s Council For Sexual Minorities. The PRGC operated from October of 1975 to August of 1978, endeavoring to both support the rural queer community in Pennsylvania as well as lobby for LGBTQ+ rights on the state and federal level. I referenced issues of the Gay Era, an LGBTQ+ newspaper published in Lancaster, PA, during this time period, and minutes and publications of the PRGC, both housed at Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections. This project illuminates the history of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in Pennsylvania and spotlights the rural queer community which is underrepresented in discussions of activism.
