Abstract
In my artwork and writing, I explore themes of mental health by designing characters and developing their stories. However, the creative process behind creating realistic, compelling characters through my zine Dandelion Delights: Fantastical Tales and Whimsical Wardrobes is extensive and has many stages to consider. To complete this project, I went through the critical first stage of brainstorming, then moved to the design and drawing stages to fully realize my fantasy-themed characters, then finally developed a design for the zine itself and created a layout that would intrigue the reader while being legible. After completing these steps and finishing the zine’s design, I printed it out and assembled it alongside the paper doll. This project was extensive and rewarding; and is described in detail to do it and the effort of myself and my committee justice. Throughout this creative process, there were many revisions made based on feedback from my advisor to ensure my project met our standards, and these versions and the feedback they warranted are described to better show my project’s course. Creating my zine and from there my thesis was an extremely rewarding process that tied my Interactive and Graphic Design major and Creative Writing and Publishing minor in with my passions and allowed for growth as an artist by developing more confidence in my decision-making and finding new independence when creating.
