Abstract

This creative project discusses the use of creative writing and its role in shaping personal identity. The project is divided up into divided in three, separate parts: the Literature Review, 20 original poems, and a critical analysis. The literature review is further divided up into 5 subcategories, or topics, related to the theme of self-discovery and exploration through the creative medium of writing poetry, all of which include the following: “Narrative Identity,” “Meaning Making” “Theme of Suffering and Growth,” “Self-Development: A never-ending journey,” and “The Role of Poetry.” This section is followed by 20 original poems written by the student. This second portion of this project will contain poems, composed of themes related to love, sorrow, heartbreak, growth and development, as related to the formation of one's 'self. This third and final section, the critical analysis, will also include a reflection on how the creative project demonstrates concepts from the scholarship, unveiling new findings and comparing the research found in the literature review to poetry.
