Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore different films and each of their portrayals of mental illness. Five movies were viewed and rated on a movie scale. These films were evaluated on how accurate they were for their depictions of mental illness, mental health treatment, and mental health professionals. They were also evaluated for how ethical and how offensive they are. It is important to view how mental illness is being portrayed in the media because it is where the public gets much of its information to form opinions and beliefs. Overall, newer movies seem to be doing a better job at portraying mental illness in a more realistic and positive light, but there is still more work that needs to be done.
